Prop Trading

5 Reasons Traders Fail Prop Challenges (And How to Avoid Them)

The failure patterns in prop challenges repeat often enough that they're worth naming individually — most attempts don't fail because of a flawed trading strategy, but because of a small number of avoidable, procedural mistakes made under the specific constraints a challenge imposes.

1. Sizing for the Target, Not the Rules

A profit target creates pressure to hit it quickly, which pushes some traders into position sizes appropriate for a much smaller drawdown limit than their challenge actually allows. The daily and maximum loss limits should set your position sizing — not the profit target and a self-imposed deadline.

2. Overtrading After a Good Start

A strong first week creates a cushion, and that cushion frequently gets treated as "free" risk to trade more aggressively with — right up until a losing streak erases both the cushion and the original starting equity in a way that trips a rule.

3. Ignoring the Daily Loss Limit Until It's Close

Traders track overall drawdown carefully and check the daily limit almost as an afterthought — but the daily rule is the one that ends the most challenge attempts, precisely because it resets every 24 hours and is easy to lose track of mid-session.

4. Trading Through News Without a Plan

Spread widens and slippage increases meaningfully around major news releases. Trading through that window without adjusting size or stops is a common way to take a loss larger than the one planned for — sometimes large enough to breach a rule that would otherwise have held.

5. Abandoning the Strategy That Got Them There

A drawdown late in a challenge often triggers a switch to a different, untested approach in an attempt to recover quickly — usually with worse results than sticking to the original, tested plan and giving it time to work.

  • Size every trade against the tightest applicable rule (usually the daily loss limit), not the profit target
  • Reduce size around major news releases rather than avoiding them entirely or ignoring the risk
  • Review your specific challenge's rule sheet before each attempt — tiers and rules can differ by account size
